The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation that could end with a auto recall of 136,444 Jeep Commanders due to the engine stalling unexpectedly.

Federal safety regulators have received 26 consumer complaints that allege "incidents of the engine stalling while driving a model year 2006 through 2007 Jeep Commander."

Many of the complaints made by consumers to the NHTSA reported repeated stalls at times with "simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems including headlamps." Two stalls resulted in traffic accidents, reports the NHTSA.

Engineers at the automaker, DaimlerChrysler, told the agency they have formed a task force to investigate the stalling problem. While the NHTSA has began its own engineering analysis to "assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences regarding the defect."
