126 People Sick after Eating Salmonella Contaminated Hummus at Festival

Over 120 people who ate from the same food both at the Taste of Chicago Food Festival became seriously ill. Nine cases have been confirmed as salmonella poisoning.

As of Thursday, at least ten people were hospitalized due to the illness, said the health department.

The number of reported cases is expected to increase as more test results come back. The 126 people who became ill, all ate the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth, which served the contaminated hummus.

This is the first salmonella outbreak associated with the Taste of Chicago in over twenty years, said the health department. Pars Cove is cooperating with health officials to find the cause of the outbreak.

Officials are inspecting the restaurant and interviewing workers who handle the foods. The bacteria could have been transmitted from a food ingredient or by food handlers, officials said.

Salmonella can cause serious illness and in some cases be fatal, especially in small children or elderly people. If you have any symptoms or believe you may have eaten the contaminated food, contact your medical doctor so your case can be reported to the health department.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

NHSTA Investigating Jeep Commanders for Engine Stalling Defect

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation that could end with a auto recall of 136,444 Jeep Commanders due to the engine stalling unexpectedly.

Federal safety regulators have received 26 consumer complaints that allege "incidents of the engine stalling while driving a model year 2006 through 2007 Jeep Commander."

Many of the complaints made by consumers to the NHTSA reported repeated stalls at times with "simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems including headlamps." Two stalls resulted in traffic accidents, reports the NHTSA.

Engineers at the automaker, DaimlerChrysler, told the agency they have formed a task force to investigate the stalling problem. While the NHTSA has began its own engineering analysis to "assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences regarding the defect."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole

Rat Poison found in Recalled Pet Food

Rat poison has been found in the recalled pet food that is responsible for the deaths of 17 cats and dogs. However, the mystery is, scientist said on Friday, they don't know how the poison got there and they are predicting more pet deaths.

After the announcement, Menu Foods expanded their recall to include all 95 brands of the "cuts and gravy" style pet food, from every location it was produced. The company said they will take responsibility for veterinary expenses that are incurred by pet owners as a result of the tainted pet food.

The toxin found in the contaminated pet food is aminopterin, a cancer drug once used to induce abortions in the United States and still used in other countries to kill rats. The federal government prohibits the use of aminopterin for killing rodents in the United States. Officials would not speculate as to how the poison got into the pet food to begin with. At this time there are no criminal investigations.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole

Dog & Cat Food Recalled for Contamination

Menu Foods Income Food announced a safety recall on their dog and cat foods that were manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The pet food recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" pet food in cans and pouches that is manufactured at two of the Fund's U.S. facilities. Both products are manufactured and sold private label to other companies and contract manufactured for some of the top national brands.

USA Today reports says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has confirmed 14 animal deaths that have resulted from consumption of contaminated pet foods.

The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine is currently investigating the cause of contamination manufactured in Ontario, Canada by Menu Foods. The pet food recall includes at least 91 brands and has pet owners around the world concerned for their pet's safety.

Officials believe wheat gluten, a substance used to thicken the gravy in the pet food may be the cause. Menu Foods had just recently switched suppliers for this ingredient in particular. There is a long list of recalled pet foods that may be contaminated. Menu Foods has an extensive list of the pet foods recalled on their website.

If you believe your dog or cat may have been affected, contact your veterinarian immediately. If you would like to speak to an attorney, please use our form on the right.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
